Can I Reheat Rice?
How should I reheat rice?
If you have stored the rice properly then you can reheat it without issue. This can be done quickly and easily in a microwave and is safe to reheat with vegetables or meat. This means you can cook rice and freeze it so that it provides a quick and easy meal at a later date. It also means that rice won’t go to waste when you cook it in a big batch. There a couple of things that you should remember when reheating rice –
– Make sure that is has been stored in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer
– Don’t eat rice that has been stored in the fridge for longer than a day
– Reheat the rice in a microwave on full power for around 2 minutes per serving
– Check that rice is steaming hot all the way through before serving
Why can’t you reheat rice that hasn’t been stored?
Rice contains bacteria that are called Bacillus cereus that creates spores. When cooked rice is safe to eat but some of these spores may still survive. If rice is left to out at room temperature then it can allow the spores to re-grow and form a bacterium that is harmful. If allowed to grow the bacteria can’t be destroyed by heat so the rice is no longer safe to eat. Therefore if you do not store rice properly before reheating then it is best to simply throw it away, as it is likely to cause illness to some degree.
This is why it is important that you store rice properly before reheating it so that it is safe to eat. Rice should be cooled straight after cooking and either stored in a fridge or a freezer depending on how long you wish to keep it for. Rice shouldn’t be left in the fridge for more than a day but is fine to store in the freezer for up to one month.
