Moni Varma
Veetee was established in 1987 by Moni Varma.
Arriving in the UK from his native Malawi, he intended to use his
skills and knowledge gained from his early career to set up a
business manufacturing reinforced mesh. However, pressure
from relatives in India led him to the rice market, and from that
day he has never looked back.
Early on, Moni recognised the huge business opportunity.
The European import duties for unmilled brown rice were
significantly lower than those for white milled rice and the
thought of a manufacturing business excited him.
Today, Veetee is one of the largest rice mills in the UK with a
global milling capacity of 225,000 tonnes per annum and has a group
turnover circa $200m.
Moni's strength is his ability to identify a problem and solve
it and this entrepreneurial spirit is evident throughout the
business. There exists a culture of challenging conventions
and making continual improvements to enhance and grow the
business.
