Long Grain Rice
Long Grain rice is very slender in shape, typically three or
four times as long as it is wide. White and semi translucent
in appearance, the cooked grains have a very light, subtle flavour
with a fluffy texture. This subtle flavour means it is the
perfect accompaniment to most dishes and it can also be used as an
ingredient.
Brown long grain rice is also available. As you would
expect the characteristics of the rice type remain, however as the
rice germ and bran layers have not been removed, it is considered
to be more nutritious than the white milled rice as the grain
retains more vitamins and fibre. It needs slightly longer to
cook than white milled grains; however it has a distinctive, nutty
flavour.
Long grain rice needs rich fertile soil together with a humid
tropical climate to grow. The key growing regions include
China, USA, Thailand and South America where these environments
provide the ideal conditions to cultivate this plant.
